The Importance Of A Strong Mind-Set

I was originally thinking of calling this post…
Confessions Of A Low-Tech Geezer In A Hi-Tech World
That just sounded too weird, even for me!

Anyway, the last couple of years I have learned a lot about putting together a website, html code, search engine optimization, and now, blogging.

Still, all in all, I am sort of a low-tech person because what I know is only equal to a single grain of sand when all there is to know is the equivalent of every grain of sand on a five mile stretch of beach.

As a fifty-something baby-boomer, I have seen a lot of changes in technology and the types of gadgets that are readily available (and usually affordable) for the average person.

Being low-tech doesn’t bother me at all. However, it’s too bad that computers and word processing programs weren’t available to use for all those reports and term papers back in high school and college.

The techie stuff that I have learned was usually because I needed to know how to build and/or edit my website or upload something to a directory or file.

Okay, here’s the point I want to make. I didn’t always have the skill-set I needed to do what I had in mind, but I was able to gain the necessary skills because I had a strong mind-set.

A successful home business (as well as many other things in life) is the result of the right combination of skill-set and mind-set.

If you don’t have a full set of skills, you can gain new skills and sharpen the ones you already have by having a strong mind-set.

However, if your mind-set is weak, all the skills in the world will only get you so far.

Let’s clarify that by mind-set, I am referring to things such as positive attitude, desire, determination, confidence, and so forth. Visualization can also be part of a strong mind-set. That’s when you can clearly see your desired outcome or result in your mind’s eye before it becomes reality.

To sum things up, a strong mind-set provides you with your best chance to have a successful home business, or to reach any other goals in your life.

What Does It Take for Home Business Success?

Success Means Having a Mind-Set Slightly Above the Average

To be successful with a home-based business, you need to be above average. No, I’m not talking about being smart or being above average in any of the other ways we usually think of when the term “above average” is mentioned.

To help clarify what I mean, let’s look at the mind-set of the “average” opportunity seeker:

  • They treat their home biz like it was a lottery ticket; they sit back and hope for the best.
  • They don’t see the point of doing their due diligence to check something out before getting involved.
  • There’s no need to read the training materials and marketing tips since they know-it-all already.
  • They’ll promote the business when they get around to it, rather than making a firm commitment.
  • They totally depend on “systems” and spillover to build their downline without any effort on their part.
  • They get sidetracked by the next “sure thing” before really giving the current one an honest effort.

Whenever I review that list, I see myself doing each of those things at some point during the years when I was in a cycle of failure. What about you, does any of that sound familiar?

I hope you can see that having a home business with the “average” mind-set described above will usually result in disappointment, unfulfilled dreams, not to mention the absence of a home biz income.

Reaching an above average level with a home-based business simply means taking the time to pick a home biz that is a “good fit” for you, following a few action steps, and staying with it.

An old friend came up with the following expression:

Pick, plan, promote, and persevere with a positive perspective.

It makes me groan, like when I hear a bad pun, but it really does sum things up.

This next expression has a powerful message for those seeking success:

If you do what 90% of the people won’t do, you can have what 90% of the people can’t have.

In other words, if you’re one of the ten percent (or less) who stick with a home-based business and do a few action steps on a continual basis without giving up, you can enjoy a lifestyle that only ten percent (or less) of the population will ever know.
